Cyber Crime Unit Recovers ₹3.28 Cr for 54 Victims of Online Fraud in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: In a commendable feat, the Cyber Crime Unit of Hyderabad City Police successfully facilitated the recovery and refund of over ₹3.28 crore to 54 victims of online financial fraud in March 2025 alone. The amount—₹3,28,01,875—was restored following court orders, after the funds were traced and frozen in accounts linked to various scam operations.

Officials stated that the most prevalent cases involved investment and stock trading scams, with 32 victims being duped of ₹1.62 crore by fraudsters offering false promises of high returns. With swift intervention from police and the judiciary, the defrauded amount was refunded.

Similarly, 14 victims fell prey to FedEx parcel scams and money laundering rackets, often operated by impersonators posing as officials from reputed government agencies. Losses amounting to ₹1.57 crore in these cases were also successfully recovered.

Other significant scams included:

  • QR code fraud: One victim, ₹43,310 recovered
  • Credit card scam: ₹88,591 recovered
  • Customer care impersonation: Four victims, ₹3.70 lakh collectively
  • APK file scam: Two victims, ₹3.39 lakh collectively

In a particularly serious incident, a 52-year-old private sector employee lost ₹47 lakh in an OTP-based fraud. The Cyber Crime Police, under Inspector K. Madhusudhan Rao, recovered ₹40 lakh, with assistance from the XII Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Citizens Urged to Remain Vigilant

Authorities have reiterated the need for caution, particularly against fraudulent schemes on Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter). These platforms have been increasingly used to promote fake investment plans promising unrealistic returns.

Officials have also warned of impersonation calls from individuals claiming to be from the CBI, RBI, ED, Customs, or TRAI, demanding payments under the guise of legal investigations. Citizens have been reminded that no government agency conducts digital arrests or online enquiries.

A growing concern is the spread of malicious APK files sent via SMS and messaging platforms. These files often masquerade as official banking applications but are used to harvest sensitive data. The public has been advised not to download or open such links, as banks do not send application files through unofficial channels.
