Bombay HC Says No Arrest of Kunal Kamra, Allows Probe to Continue

The Bombay High Court ruled on April 25 that the investigation against comedian Kunal Kamra over his remarks on Eknath Shinde can proceed. However, the court directed that Kamra should not be arrested during the investigation. The case pertains to comments allegedly made against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The police had earlier registered an FIR following a complaint from a local political worker. A division bench observed that freedom of speech must be respected within constitutional limits. The court clarified that no coercive steps would be taken against Kamra at this stage. The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for mid-May. Kamra’s counsel argued that the remarks were satirical in nature. The state government assured the court that due process will be followed. Legal experts welcomed the court’s balanced interim order.
