Iran Serious About US Talks, Wants No Delays in Sanctions Deal: Deputy FM

Tehran | April 21, 2025: Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has stated that Tehran is fully committed to its indirect negotiations with the United States, emphasizing that there should be no delay in the diplomatic process aimed at lifting economic sanctions.
Speaking at a closed-door briefing with Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Gharibabadi said both sides had made progress in Rome during their second round of talks, following earlier discussions in Muscat, Oman on April 12.
“The overall framework, agenda, and technical dialogue roadmap have been agreed upon,” he said, according to committee spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei.
Iran insists that all US-imposed sanctions must be lifted in a way that provides tangible economic benefits for its citizens. Gharibabadi reiterated that Iran will not compromise on its right to enrich uranium, calling it a non-negotiable red line.
The discussions focus on Tehran’s nuclear program and potential steps to revive the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — the nuclear deal Iran signed with the US, UK, China, France, Germany, and Russia.
The US withdrew from the deal in 2018, under President Trump, and reinstated sanctions, which led Iran to scale back its compliance.
While the Rome and Muscat talks have been described as “constructive,” no formal agreement has been reached yet. The path forward remains fragile, but both parties appear open to continued engagement.
