Scorching Days Ahead: IMD Issues Heatwave Alert for Delhi, Gujarat & Northern India

New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh heatwave alert as India steps into the peak of summer. The warning affects key states including Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, with immediate concern for the next 4–5 days.
In the national capital, temperatures are expected to touch 40°C, prompting a yellow alert from the IMD. Alongside the scorching temperatures, Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated, currently hovering around an AQI of 230 — categorized as “poor.”
The IMD Heatwave Alert indicates that severe heatwave conditions will likely impact north and central India, including Haryana and parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region in Gujarat. Dry and oppressive conditions will dominate these regions from April 5 to April 10, depending on local weather patterns.
A steady rise in temperatures is anticipated across central India, with no significant relief expected in the coming days. Isolated pockets of coastal Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa will also experience hot and humid conditions between April 6 and April 9.
The IMD has advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and adhere to local health advisories to prevent heat-related illnesses.
