Gau rakshaks assault cattle traders near Hyderabad; 4 injured

Hyderabad, May 10, 2025 — Tension escalated in the Medipally area near Hyderabad early Saturday morning as a group of self-styled cow vigilantes, known as gau rakshaks, attacked cattle traders transporting livestock to the city. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in Narapally village, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, when the traders were moving cattle purchased from the Bhainsa market\

According to reports, the gau rakshaks intercepted the vehicles, forcibly removed the traders, and assaulted them, resulting in injuries to four individuals. Following the attack, the traders were taken to the Medipally police station, where they were allegedly detained.AIMIM MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig visited the police station upon learning of the incident. He engaged with senior officials, demanding immediate medical attention for the injured and the registration of a case against the assailants. Subsequently, the police registered a case against the gau rakshaks and assured appropriate action would be taken.This incident is part of a series of similar attacks in the region. In February, three cattle traders were assaulted in Shamshabad while transporting buffaloes from Jadcherla to Hyderabad. The attackers, identified as gau rakshaks, stopped the truck at Gagan Pahad, dragged the traders out, and beat them. The victims sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized.

These recurring incidents have raised concerns among local communities and human rights organizations. Activists argue that such vigilantism undermines the rule of law and endangers the livelihoods of legitimate cattle traders.

Law enforcement agencies have been urged to take stringent measures against such unlawful activities and ensure the safety of individuals involved in the cattle trade. The police have reiterated their commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens from vigilante violence.

As investigations continue, authorities have called for calm and cooperation from the public to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.
