Kharge demands special Parliament session on Pahalgam attack

New Delhi: In the wake of the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has demanded the immediate convening of a special session of Parliament to discuss the growing threats to national security. The demand comes amid political outrage and public concern over the increasing frequency of militant attacks in the region.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Kharge criticized the central government’s “complacent approach” and questioned the intelligence and security lapses that led to the attack. “The country deserves answers. Parliament must meet immediately to hold a comprehensive debate on this issue,” he asserted.
Kharge stated that the attack was not just an isolated incident but a sign of deeper security failures in the Union Territory. He also accused the ruling government of not being transparent about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Pahalgam terror attack claimed the lives of several civilians and left many injured, creating widespread fear and unrest in the region. Security forces have launched a massive combing operation, but opposition leaders insist more accountability is needed.
The Congress leader emphasized that matters of internal security must be treated with urgency, and demanded a clear statement from the Prime Minister in Parliament.
Political leaders across party lines have echoed concerns about the attack, with several demanding stronger counter-terrorism policies and improved intelligence coordination.
Kharge said that a special session would allow all parties to present their views and come together for a united national strategy against terrorism.
Meanwhile, the central government has not yet responded to the demand, though Home Ministry officials have stated that investigations are ongoing and full details will be shared soon.
As tension continues to mount in Kashmir, the call for a special parliamentary discussion is gaining traction among opposition benches and civil society alike.
Analysts suggest that how the government responds to this demand may shape the political narrative in the coming weeks, especially with national security becoming a dominant issue ahead of the next parliamentary session.
