Telangana government appoints 4 new RTI Commissioners

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has officially appointed four new Right to Information (RTI) Commissioners, marking a major step towards enhancing transparency and citizen accountability in governance. The appointments were announced on Monday following approval from the Governor.

The newly appointed RTI Commissioners are expected to play a crucial role in resolving pending appeals and complaints filed under the RTI Act, 2005. This move is aimed at clearing backlogs and ensuring timely access to public information.

The appointed Commissioners include retired bureaucrats and legal experts with strong records of public service. Their expertise is expected to improve the functioning of the State Information Commission, which has been facing staff shortages and case pile-ups for years.

Officials stated that the government is committed to strengthening democratic processes and ensuring that citizens’ right to information is not delayed or denied.

Civil society groups have welcomed the appointments, stating that an active and efficient Information Commission is vital for curbing corruption and empowering citizens.

The RTI Act, enacted in 2005, allows citizens to seek information from government bodies, and an effective Information Commission ensures that this right is implemented without unnecessary delays.

The new Commissioners will undergo orientation and begin hearings shortly. The Chief Information Commissioner is expected to assign them specific departments and zones for effective workload distribution.

With this development, Telangana aims to become one of the leading states in RTI compliance and governance transparency.

The appointments come at a time when activists and citizens have raised concerns over the slow response times and case pendency in the Information Commission.

By inducting four new Commissioners, the government intends to significantly reduce waiting periods and build public trust in the system.

This reform is in line with Telangana’s broader administrative agenda to make government services more accessible, transparent, and responsive to the needs of its citizens.
