Addicted doctor sold Rs 1 cr property to pay for drugs: Cops

Hyderabad, India – In a shocking turn of events, Dr. Namrata Chigurupati, the former CEO of Omega Hospital in Hyderabad, was arrested for purchasing 53 grams of cocaine worth ₹5 lakh. Investigations revealed that to sustain her addiction, she had sold a property valued at approximately ₹1 crore.

According to the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB), Dr. Chigurupati had been consuming cocaine multiple times a day, sometimes up to 10 times within 24 hours. Her addiction reportedly began during her MBA studies in Spain and escalated after her return to India.

Police apprehended Dr. Chigurupati and her associate, Balakrishna Rampyar Ram, a Mumbai-based courier, near a restaurant in Shaikpet on May 8. The duo was found in possession of cocaine, ₹10,000 in cash, and two mobile phones. Investigations revealed that Dr. Chigurupati had ordered the drugs via WhatsApp from a Mumbai-based supplier, Vansh Thakkar, a DJ with alleged links to the drug trade.

Further scrutiny of Dr. Chigurupati’s financials indicated that she had liquidated a ₹1 crore property to fund her drug habit. Despite prior warnings from her family and police advising her to seek rehabilitation, she continued her illicit activities.

Omega Hospital has issued a statement distancing itself from Dr. Chigurupati, clarifying that she is not associated with the institution in any capacity. The hospital emphasized that the incident is an isolated personal matter and not linked to its operations.

This case highlights the growing concern of substance abuse among professionals and underscores the need for heightened awareness and intervention. Authorities continue to investigate the broader network involved in this narcotics operation.
