Intense storms expected in Hyderabad; IMD issues 4-day rains alert

Hyderabad, May 13: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an intense 4-day rain alert for Hyderabad, predicting heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several parts of the city and surrounding districts.
According to the IMD bulletin released today, the alert will remain in effect from May 13 to May 16, with the possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period. The weather agency has attributed the development to a cyclonic circulation over Telangana and adjoining areas.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds up to 40–50 km/h are expected. The IMD has urged citizens to take necessary precautions, especially during evening and nighttime hours when the intensity is expected to peak.
Low-lying areas may experience waterlogging, and motorists are advised to avoid travel during peak rainfall hours. GHMC authorities have been instructed to remain on alert and activate emergency response teams across vulnerable zones.
Schools and colleges have been advised to remain cautious while planning outdoor activities, and residents are requested to avoid taking shelter under trees or electric poles during storms.
Telangana Disaster Response Force (TDRF) has also been put on standby. Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided daily.
This marks one of the earliest intense weather warnings for the season, hinting at a potentially active monsoon ahead.
Health experts have warned residents to stay indoors during lightning storms and ensure proper drainage around their homes to avoid mosquito breeding.
The IMD also forecasted a drop in temperatures during the rain spell, bringing temporary relief from the recent summer heatwave.
The general public is encouraged to follow weather updates via official IMD channels and avoid spreading unverified information.
Further advisories are expected in the coming days based on evolving weather patterns.
