Andhra Pradesh to Launch Free Bus Travel for Women Starting August 15

In a significant move towards women’s empowerment, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced the implementation of free bus travel for women across the state, effective from August 15, 2025. This initiative, part of the government’s “Super Six” welfare promises, aims to enhance mobility and reduce transportation costs for women
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu made the announcement during a public meeting in Kurnool district, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fulfilling its electoral promises and promoting gender equality. The scheme will allow women to travel free of charge on Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses.
The free travel facility is expected to cover various categories of APSRTC services, including Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, Express, City Ordinary, and Metro Express buses. Women passengers will receive “zero tickets” during travel, with the actual fare recorded in electronic point-of-sale (e-POS) machines for government reimbursement.
Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy highlighted that the scheme is projected to cost the state approximately ₹3,182 crore annually. Currently, APSRTC buses operate at 69% occupancy, but this is anticipated to rise to 94% following the scheme’s implementation. The number of women passengers is expected to increase by approximately 10.84 lakh daily. The government has also indicated that the scheme may be implemented statewide, similar to models in neighboring states like Telangana and Karnataka. Final details regarding the scheme’s scope and implementation are expected to be clarified in the coming weeks.
