Sikandar Kher Reminisces About Shah Rukh Khan’s Devdas Shoot: From Injuries to Selfless Acts on Set

Sikandar Kher recently opened up about his experience working on the sets of Devdas, sharing unique behind-the-scenes stories, including one where Shah Rukh Khan injured himself during a scene.

Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is one of Shah Rukh Khan’s most iconic roles, where he portrayed the troubled character of Devdas. Alongside stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff, Shah Rukh’s portrayal was widely praised. Sikandar Kher, who worked as an assistant director on the film and is the son of actress Kirron Kher, shared some unforgettable moments from his time on set during an appearance on the YouTube channel Tape A Tale.

In his conversation, Kher revealed, “I always knew Devdas would be a huge film, and I wanted to document the making of it. Sanjay’s films always generate buzz, and people work hard to create that kind of excitement for their projects, but Sanjay’s work naturally brings attention.” Kher also recalled how he was struggling to get a camera for the shoot but Shah Rukh Khan generously lent him his own camera setup. “It was an amazing camera with different lenses and a tripod. I ended up shooting over 22 hours of footage,” Kher shared.

One particular moment stood out for Kher when Shah Rukh was filming a scene where he breaks bottles in a fit of rage. “During that scene, Shah Rukh cut his finger, and I was right there with my camera, capturing the moment using the night vision,” he said.

Kher also praised Shah Rukh Khan for his selflessness and generosity on set. “He is one of the most giving actors I’ve ever seen. Shah Rukh would even give away his lines to make sure the scene worked. His generosity extends to everyone on set,” Kher noted.

Other members of the Devdas team, like director Vikramaditya Motwane, have also shared stories of Shah Rukh’s dedication. Motwane once mentioned how Shah Rukh applied honey to his face to attract flies for a scene, demonstrating his commitment to bringing authenticity to the character. “His mind is always working, thinking of how to elevate the scene. Shah Rukh does small, impactful things that make a huge difference. He’s also someone who makes everyone around him feel valued,” Motwane added.
