Russia, Ukraine to begin ceasefire talks ‘immediately’, says Trump

In a significant development, President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine will commence ceasefire negotiations immediately. This follows a two-hour phone call between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 19, 2025. Trump described the conversation as “very positive” and expressed cautious optimism about the potential for peace.

During the call, President Putin indicated Russia’s readiness to work on a memorandum outlining the principles and timelines for a potential peace agreement. However, he emphasized the necessity of addressing the underlying causes of the conflict, including territorial issues and security concerns.

Following the call with Putin, President Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to an unconditional ceasefire. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of sustained international pressure to ensure that Russia adheres to any agreements reached.

The announcement comes after recent direct negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Turkey, which resulted in a limited exchange of prisoners but failed to achieve a ceasefire. The Vatican has expressed interest in hosting future peace talks, providing a neutral venue for discussions.

While the immediate resumption of talks is a positive step, significant challenges remain. Both sides have entrenched positions, and the international community remains vigilant, urging both Russia and Ukraine to engage in meaningful dialogue to end the conflict that has persisted for over three years.

The United States has indicated its willingness to support the peace process but has also warned that it may reconsider its involvement if tangible progress is not made. European leaders have expressed support for Ukraine and have urged continued diplomatic efforts to bring about a lasting resolution.

As negotiations begin, the world watches closely, hopeful that this renewed diplomatic initiative will lead to a cessation of hostilities and pave the way for a comprehensive peace agreement.
