Remarks on Col Sofiya Qureshi: SC to hear MP minister’s plea on Friday

New Delhi, May 16, 2025:
The Supreme Court of India will hear a plea filed by Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah this Friday in connection with the controversial remarks he made against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a decorated Indian Army officer. The comments, deemed derogatory by many, have ignited political backlash and led to public outrage across the nation.
The case stems from Shah’s recent statement referring to Col Qureshi as a “sister from a terrorist community,” a remark that drew condemnation from political leaders, activists, and defense veterans alike. The statement has been widely criticized as defamatory and damaging to the dignity of a serving officer.
Col Sofiya Qureshi, who earned national recognition as the first woman to lead an all-men contingent at the Republic Day parade, is seen as a symbol of women’s empowerment in the Indian armed forces. Legal experts have pointed out that such remarks could constitute hate speech and incitement under the Indian Penal Code.
A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against Shah last week after the Madhya Pradesh High Court found prima facie grounds for defamation and incitement. Shah later issued an apology, calling his statement a “slip of tongue” and expressing regret if it had hurt sentiments.
However, rights groups argue that an apology is not enough and are demanding a public retraction and punitive action. “You cannot defame a uniformed officer and walk away with a sorry,” said advocate Meenakshi Rao, who represents several defense personnel.
The Supreme Court bench, led by Justice Hima Kohli, will hear Shah’s special leave petition challenging the High Court’s order directing criminal proceedings. The outcome of the hearing could have wider implications on political speech and the boundaries of public discourse.
Meanwhile, Col Qureshi has maintained a dignified silence, continuing her duties amidst the media storm. Support has poured in for her on social media, with the hashtag #StandWithSofiya trending nationally.
Political analysts believe this issue may also influence upcoming state elections, particularly among urban voters who see this as a matter of respect for the armed forces.
As the hearing nears, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court to determine whether freedom of expression can override the dignity and honor of those who serve the nation in uniform.
