Saudi Arabia making efforts to de-escalate India-Pakistan tensions
In the wake of intensifying military confrontations between India and Pakistan, Saudi Arabia has initiated diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
On May 8 and 9, Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir visited New Delhi and Islamabad, engaging with top officials to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The Saudi Foreign Ministry stated that these visits were part of the Kingdom’s “ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions, end current military confrontations, and promote the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels” .
The recent surge in hostilities follows a deadly attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily tourists. India has attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants, leading to retaliatory strikes on alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan has denied involvement and launched its own military operations in response .
The escalating conflict has raised international concerns, with fears that the situation could spiral into a full-scale war. Saudi Arabia’s intervention underscores its strategic interest in maintaining regional stability, given its economic and diplomatic ties with both India and Pakistan.
During his visit to India, Al-Jubeir met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss the security situation and explore avenues for de-escalation. Subsequently, in Islamabad, he held talks with Pakistani leadership, emphasizing the importance of restraint and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions .
Analysts view Saudi Arabia’s mediation as a significant development, reflecting a shift in the geopolitical landscape where Gulf states are taking a more active role in South Asian affairs. This move also highlights the limitations of traditional Western interventions, as regional powers increasingly assert their influence in conflict resolution efforts .
