IPL 2025 suspended for one week, BCCI cites national interest

New Delhi, May 10, 2025 — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the immediate suspension of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 season for one week, citing escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan as the primary reason. The decision underscores the BCCI’s commitment to national interest and the safety of players, staff, and fans.
The suspension follows a series of cross-border hostilities, including missile strikes and drone attacks, particularly in the Kashmir region. A recent incident involved the abandonment of a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala due to security concerns, where floodlights failed amid regional instability.
In an official statement, BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia said, “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.”
The BCCI emphasized its solidarity with the Indian government and armed forces, highlighting the importance of national security over sporting events. The board also expressed gratitude to stakeholders, including broadcasters and sponsors, for their understanding and support during this period.
The IPL 2025 season, which began on March 22, had 12 group matches remaining before the playoffs, originally scheduled to conclude on May 25 in Kolkata. The suspension has led to uncertainties regarding the tournament’s resumption, with discussions ongoing about potential alternative venues and dates.
In response to the suspension, several international players have begun returning to their home countries, and the Pakistan Cricket Board has also postponed its domestic tournament, the Pakistan Super League (PSL), amid similar security concerns.
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly supported the BCCI’s decision, stating, “There is a war-like situation, so this decision had to be taken… BCCI is a very efficient organisation and they will find a solution.”
As the situation develops, the BCCI will continue to monitor the geopolitical climate and consult with relevant authorities to determine the feasibility of resuming the IPL 2025 season. Further announcements regarding the tournament’s future are expected in the coming days.
