32 airports shut for civilian flight operations till May 15

New Delhi, May 10, 2025 — In a significant move affecting air travel across the country, the Indian government has temporarily suspended civilian flight operations at 32 airports until May 15, citing intensified national security measures.

The decision comes amid escalating regional tensions and the need to prioritize strategic air operations by the armed forces. The Ministry of Civil Aviation, in coordination with the Ministry of Defence, has directed the closure of these airports to the public, labeling them as “no-fly zones” for commercial aircraft.

While the government has not released the full list of affected airports, sources suggest that many of them are located in border states and sensitive zones, including Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and the Northeast.

Passengers scheduled to fly from or to these airports have been advised to contact their respective airlines for rescheduling or refunds. Several domestic carriers have already issued public notices and begun rerouting flights.

According to officials, this move is precautionary and temporary, but critical to maintaining operational readiness of the Indian Air Force and other national security agencies. Military aircraft will continue to operate from these airports uninterrupted.

A senior defense official stated, “These airports are being used for strategic logistics and rapid deployment in case of emergency. Civilian movement during this period is restricted for national safety.”

Travelers across India have expressed both concern and support, with some worrying about disrupted plans while others welcomed the step as a necessary precaution.

This restriction is expected to ease after May 15, depending on the ground situation and intelligence inputs.

Authorities have urged the public not to panic and assured that alternate airports will remain operational for essential civilian movement.

As the situation evolves, updates from both the aviation and defense ministries are expected in the coming days. Travelers are encouraged to monitor official channels regularly for flight advisories.

This marks one of the largest peacetime restrictions on civilian air travel in recent Indian history
