Osmania University’s Arts College Becomes India’s Third Trademarked Building

Hyderabad | April 21, 2025: The Arts College building of Osmania University (OU) has become the third structure in India to receive trademark registration for its architectural design, securing exclusive rights over its commercial use and visual representation.
Built in 1939, the Arts College building is a prominent symbol of Hyderabad’s architectural and educational legacy. With this legal protection, Osmania University can now prevent unauthorized use or branding of the building’s image.
“This move helps preserve OU’s iconic identity while safeguarding it from misuse,” the university said in a statement.
The registration was facilitated by Subhajit Saha, trademark agent with Resolute Group, who confirmed that the only two other buildings in India with such status are:
- Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai (2017)
- Bombay Stock Exchange
“Trademarking buildings is still rare in India, but iconic spaces like T-Hub and T-Works in Hyderabad could follow this path to protect their design identity,” said Saha.
The move is being hailed as a pioneering step in architectural preservation and brand protection in the academic sector.
