NMC warns against medical college scam, clarifies on foreign MBBS

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a stern warning to aspiring medical students and their families about the rise of fraudulent medical colleges operating without proper authorization in India. These institutions are misleading students by offering fake admission letters and unapproved courses. The NMC emphasizes that only medical colleges listed on its official website are recognized to offer MBBS and other medical degree programs in India .

In addition to domestic concerns, the NMC has clarified the guidelines for Indian students pursuing MBBS abroad. According to the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021, students must ensure that their foreign medical education meets specific criteria to be eligible for practice in India. Key requirements include:

  • Minimum 54 months of education in a single institution.
  • 12-month internship completed at the same foreign university.
  • Clinical training must not be done in parts or across different countries.
  • Medium of instruction must be English.
  • Registration with the medical authority in the country where the degree is awarded.

Failure to comply with these regulations may lead to disqualification from licensing exams such as the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and denial of permanent registration in India .

The NMC advises students and parents to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of medical institutions before making any commitments. It is crucial to consult the official NMC website and avoid relying solely on college websites or advertisements. The NMC does not conduct direct admissions to any medical college in India; the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) remains the sole valid route for admission to MBBS courses in India .

For further assistance or to report suspicious activities, stakeholders may contact the NMC helpline at +91-11-25367033. The NMC urges all concerned to stay vigilant to protect oneself and the integrity of the Indian medical education system.
