Adani Green becomes world’s 1st renewable energy IPP to turn water positive

In a historic achievement for the renewable energy sector, Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has become the world’s first renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) to achieve water positive status. This milestone positions AGEL as a sustainability leader not only in India but on the global stage.
The company reported that it has replenished more water than it consumed across its operations in the financial year 2023-24. According to AGEL’s sustainability report, the group has achieved a water positivity index of 1.12, indicating it returned 112% of its freshwater consumption back to the environment through rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and community water projects.
This accomplishment is a direct outcome of Adani Green’s focused environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy. The company has implemented advanced water conservation techniques across its solar and wind power plants spread throughout India.
AGEL’s CEO, Vneet Jaain, stated, “Achieving water positivity reflects our unwavering commitment to resource conservation and sustainable development. As the first renewable IPP to do so, we are proud to set an example for the entire energy industry.”
The announcement is particularly significant at a time when water scarcity poses a growing threat to both ecosystems and economies worldwide. AGEL’s proactive measures support India’s larger climate goals and contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
Experts believe this achievement could set a precedent for other energy firms globally. By aligning growth with ecological stewardship, AGEL demonstrates that large-scale energy development can coexist with responsible resource management.
Adani Green is also aiming to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, and this water milestone represents another major step toward that goal. With over 8 GW of operational renewable capacity, the company continues to lead India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
Industry analysts have praised the move, noting that AGEL’s leadership could influence regulatory frameworks and ESG investment flows in the renewable energy space.
This landmark makes AGEL a case study in how corporate ambition, when matched with sustainability, can yield global firsts in environmental responsibility.
