Topic: Operation Abhyaas: City-wide Mock Drill Conducted in Hyderabad on May 7

Hyderabad, May 7, 2025 — A massive city-wide emergency preparedness drill, Operation Abhyaas, was carried out across Hyderabad on Tuesday, May 7. The initiative, organized by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), simulated multiple disaster scenarios to evaluate and enhance the city’s disaster response capabilities.

The drill included mock incidents like building collapses, chemical leaks, fire breakouts, and rescue operations across key zones including Hitec City, Secunderabad, Begumpet, and Charminar. Over 5,000 personnel from fire services, police, health departments, NDRF, and civic agencies participated.

The objective of Operation Abhyaas was to test inter-agency coordination, public communication protocols, and emergency evacuation procedures in real-time. Citizens were informed in advance through public notices, social media, and SMS alerts to avoid panic during the simulated events.

Traffic diversions were implemented at select locations, and emergency sirens were sounded as part of the drill. Medical response teams were stationed strategically to respond to simulated casualties.

GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose stated, “Operation Abhyaas is a proactive step to ensure Hyderabad’s readiness in the face of unforeseen disasters. The learnings from today will help us plug gaps and enhance overall preparedness.”

Observers from NDMA and state disaster management authorities monitored the drill and are expected to submit a comprehensive assessment report in the coming weeks.

The drill also served as a public awareness initiative, educating citizens on safety protocols during emergencies such as earthquakes, industrial accidents, and floods.

Schools, hospitals, malls, and IT parks actively participated in the drill, conducting their own internal evacuation and safety checks.

This large-scale mock drill marks a significant milestone in Hyderabad’s disaster readiness efforts, positioning the city as a model for urban emergency planning and response in India.
