India captain Rohit Sharma announces retirement from Test cricket

India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket. The 37-year-old opener made the announcement following India’s recent home Test series, citing personal and professional reasons.
Rohit, who made his Test debut in 2013 against the West Indies, has played 58 Test matches for India, scoring over 4,000 runs including 10 centuries and 16 fifties. Known for his elegant stroke play and calm leadership, Rohit played a pivotal role in stabilizing India’s top order in recent years.
In a press conference held at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Rohit expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans. “It’s been an incredible journey wearing the whites for India. Test cricket challenges you like no other format, and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to contribute,” he said.
Rohit assumed Test captaincy in 2022 after Virat Kohli stepped down. Under his leadership, India retained their top position in the World Test Championship standings and secured historic wins at home and abroad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued an official statement congratulating Rohit on his remarkable career and acknowledged his contributions as a leader and player.
Cricket experts and former players have poured in their tributes, hailing Rohit’s legacy in the longest format. Sunil Gavaskar described him as “a captain who brought calmness and clarity to the Indian Test setup.”
While stepping away from Test cricket, Rohit confirmed that he will continue to play in ODIs and T20Is. He is also expected to lead India in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup later this year.
The announcement has stirred strong emotions among fans across the country, many of whom took to social media to thank the veteran for his service to Indian cricket.
As India prepares for the future, speculation has already begun regarding his successor in the Test format, with KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah being touted as potential candidates.
Rohit Sharma’s departure from Test cricket leaves behind a legacy of consistency, leadership, and elegance — one that will be remembered for generations to come.
